|
| For
the fifth consecutive year, Fantasy Football Experts invited some of the
leading fantasy football analysts in the country to rank the top players at
each position and compete against each other for the title of 2006 FFEx
Expert Poll Champion. In all, 12 experts (10 guests plus two FFEx staff
members) each ranked 10 quarterbacks, 15 running backs, 15 wide receivers,
10 tight ends, 10 kickers, and 10 team defenses/special teams from best to
worst for an overall-performance scoring system.
To calculate an
overall ranking, the experts’ selections were weighted. The weight equaled
the total number of players the expert was asked to rank at that respective
position, minus the player’s rank, plus one. For example, if an expert
ranked Peyton Manning as the No. 1 QB, the weight of that selection
would be 10 (10 players ranked at QB, minus 1 for Manning’s ranking, plus
1).
At the end of the
season, FFEx will tally and post the results of the poll. Each expert’s
score will be equal to each ranked player’s fantasy points for the season
multiplied by the weight that was assigned to that player by the expert.
For example, if Manning racks up 400 fantasy points this season, any expert
who ranked Manning No. 1 (weight = 10) will earn 4,000 points from the Colts
QB. Click here to see
last year's results.
FFEx would like to
thank all of the experts who participated. Their selections have been
listed in this order: Cory Bonini of KFFL.com, Jeff Christiansen
of FFToolbox.com, Brad Curtright of SportsUncensored.com, Brad
Haines of FantasyFootballExperts.com, myself (Richard Harris of
FantasyFootballExperts.com), Greg Kellogg of GridironGrumblings.com,
Mike Krueger of FFToday.com, Matt Pitzer of USAToday.com,
Steve Siniski (the reigning FFEx Expert Poll champ) of FSRU.com, Kyle
Smith of FantasyFootballXtreme.com, Tommy Stephens of
FantasyFootballEdge.net, and Carl Weatherford of CoachBox.com. You
can read more about our
distinguished panel at the end of the poll results.
QUARTERBACKS
Peyton Manning
was a unanimous selection for the No. 1 spot at quarterback, which was no
surprise. He significantly outdistanced the rest of the pack, which was led
by Tom Brady and Matt Hasselbeck. After the top three, the
point differential was very tight.
The
boldest pick had to come from Kellogg, who ranked Drew Bledsoe at No.
2. Kellogg wasn’t alone, however, in thinking that Terrell Owens
will make Bledsoe a top-10 QB this season, as the Cowboy signal caller
received eight of 12 votes. Other surprise picks included Haines and
Siniski ranking Daunte Culpepper at No. 4.

RUNNING BACKS
The
Chiefs’ Larry Johnson led the way at running back, garnering all but
one first-place vote. In just nine starts last season, he was more
productive than 99 percent of the other backs in the league, so the experts’
logic appears to be sound. Shaun Alexander, last season’s top
fantasy point producer, and LaDainian Tomlinson tied for second.
Combined with Johnson, the three backs should be the first three overall
players taken in most 2006 drafts.
Clinton Portis
and Tiki Barber were solidly entrenched at the fourth and fifth
spots, respectively. After that, the backs were tightly grouped, ranging
from LaMont Jordan at No. 6 to Rudi Johnson at No. 10.
The
boldest picks at running back came from Smith, who ranked Ronnie Brown
fourth and Chris Perry 15th. Undoubtedly, Smitty likes the fact that
fellow Dolphin Ricky Williams relocated to Canada for at least one
season. As for the Perry selection, Smith must be banking on Rudi
Johnson going down with an injury.
